Frequently Asked Questions
Thinking about becoming a Freemason? Here are answers to some of the questions we’re most often asked.
Do I need to know a Freemason to join?
No. You don’t need to know anyone who is already a Freemason to express an interest in joining. Simply get in touch, and we can help introduce you to a suitable local lodge. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions, meet members and learn more before deciding whether to proceed.
Who can become a Freemason?
Freemasonry under the United Grand Lodge of England is generally open to men aged 18 and over, from all backgrounds, who meet its membership requirements. Applicants must have a belief in a Supreme Being, but no particular religious affiliation is required. Women’s Freemasonry is also available through separate organisations.
How much does it cost to become a Freemason?
Membership costs vary between lodges, but generally include an initial joining fee and an annual subscription. There may also be additional costs for dining after meetings and attending social events. All relevant fees will be explained before you decide to join, so you can make an informed decision.
How often do Freemasons meet?
Each Masonic lodge has its own meeting schedule, with most meeting regularly throughout the year. In addition to formal meetings, members can enjoy social occasions, charitable activities and dining together. The level of involvement is flexible, and your lodge will explain its meeting commitments before you join.
Is Freemasonry a religion?
No. Freemasonry is not a religion, nor is it a substitute for one. Freemasonry under the United Grand Lodge of England welcomes men from different religious backgrounds, although members must believe in a Supreme Being. Freemasonry does not promote any particular religion and encourages members to respect one another’s individual beliefs.
